The Tune-Up Shop answers your questions concerning ways to improve network
performance. We encourage you to write to the Tune-Up Shop if you have
helpful hints to offer, interesting stories to tell, or if you have questions
that we can answer.
I add two or three nodes to our TCC ARCNET network each month and it's
getting difficult to keep track of all the different adapter configurations
and node IDs. Help!
You need TCCHELP, one of our most popular utilities. TCCHELP is a
menu-driven program that currently offers you two utilities: Switch Help
and Read Adapter.
The Switch Help option gives you a graphical display of our most commonly
used ARCNET and TCNS adapters. Switch Help displays a diagram of the adapter
that shows the location of its switches and jumper blocks, an enlarged
drawing of each switch block, and a list of the configuration components.
You can scroll through the different configuration components and their
setting options. As you scroll through the settings, the enlarged drawings
of the switch blocks will change to show you which switches are off and which
are on for each setting. Switch Help is great for determining switch settings
if the manual is not at hand.
The Read Adapter option checks the adapter in your computer and displays the
current settings for operational mode (enhanced or compatible), base memory
address, base I/O address (if the adapter is set in compatible mode), and
node ID. (Because Read Adapter reinitializes your adapter, it may disconnect
you from the network. If this occurs simply log back on.)
With Read Adapter you can check your adapter's current configuration without
ever opening the computer's case.
